Searching your company name now triggers a Google AI answer

Since late September 2026, typing a company name into Google usually returns an answer written by Google's AI before the links to that company's own website. Ahrefs measured an AI Overview on 82.91% of US desktop Google results for branded keywords as of September 29, 2026, against a July 2026 monthly average of 61.3%. DemandSphere, tracking branded queries across all markets and all devices, went from 26.12% on September 1, 2026 to 82.06% on September 29, 2026.

Until now, Google's AI Overviews concentrated on open questions: how to do something, which option is best, what something costs. The branded query, the one where a customer types your name because they are looking for you specifically, stayed your own ground. That is the query that changed character in September 2026.

What exactly happened in September 2026?

Google extended its AI Overviews to branded and navigational queries without announcing it. DemandSphere states plainly, in its October 1, 2026 post, that Google has made no announcement about the change. Barry Schwartz had flagged it on September 30, 2026 on Search Engine Roundtable, reporting AI Overviews on the names of Reddit, Salesforce, Amazon and Adobe, with two notable exceptions: Google's own name, and the names of news publications.

The curve DemandSphere published is not a clean ramp, and that is information in itself. A staircase rollout that falls back from one day to the next looks more like a live test than a settled state.

  • September 1, 2026: 26.12% of tracked branded queries returned an AI Overview.
  • September 18, 2026: 57.43%, back down to 31.15% the following day.
  • September 27, 2026: 90.48%, the high point of the month.
  • September 29, 2026: 82.06%, the last day measured.

Ahrefs ran a wider and slower measurement: 92.5 million US desktop search-result crawls on branded keywords between July and September 2026, plus a panel of 100 brands drawn from the Interbrand Best Global Brands 2025 ranking, checked at fourteen weekly intervals. The monthly average rises from 61.3% in July 2026 to 65.1% in August 2026, then 73.3% in September 2026. Two different methods, two different corpora, the same direction.

Why is a branded query different from any other query?

A branded query is purchase intent that has already formed. When someone types your company name, they are no longer comparing options: they are looking for you, and they are one click from contacting you. It is the cheapest and highest converting search in your entire acquisition mix, and the one you never had to optimise.

Ahrefs adds a detail that carries weight: 76.2% of branded AI Overviews appear in the first position, for an average position of 1.49. The overview does not round out the bottom of the results page, it sits above your own site. The visitor reads a version of your company written by Google before reading yours.

What does this change for a small or mid-sized business?

Three things change, and a fourth stays unknown. First, your name is no longer an annuity. If a prospect types your company name and reads a Google paragraph before reaching you, the first impression of your business is no longer yours. It is assembled from whatever third-party sources say about you.

Second, your measurement is probably blind. Monitorank, studying 2 million French result pages collected between September 9 and 14, 2026, found that 48.6% of AI Overviews load after the page through a secondary request, the initial page code containing only an empty block. Any tool that reads the first load alone therefore undercounts close to half of them. If your dashboard says your branded queries are fine, check what it is actually looking at.

Third, the trend predates September. The Ahrefs monthly averages show branded AI Overviews climbing from 61.3% in July 2026 to 65.1% in August 2026 before the September jump. September was an acceleration of something already under way, not a switch being flipped.

  • What is measured: the presence of an AI Overview on branded queries, sharply up across two independent datasets.
  • What is not measured: lost clicks on those specific queries. Neither study counts clicks.
  • What the sample is: the Ahrefs 82.91% figure covers US desktop results and the hundred largest global brands, not local businesses.
  • What is unconfirmed: Google has said nothing, and a jump this abrupt can be rolled back.

What is Google writing that paragraph about you from?

Across the branded AI Overviews Ahrefs analysed in September 2026, three domains lead the cited sources: Wikipedia in 71.9% of cases, YouTube in 38.6% and LinkedIn in 22.8%. These are pages most companies do not own, or control only partly.

A small business has no Wikipedia page. In that case Google draws from elsewhere: directories, business listings, customer reviews, local press, comparison pages written by third parties, and sometimes a competitor's page that happens to mention you. Our article « ChatGPT is citing YouTube and Facebook far less. The lesson is about what you do not own. » described the opposite movement at OpenAI, where the weight of the large platforms was receding in favour of brand-owned sites. The two engines do not feed on the same material, which makes depending on any single platform the weaker bet.

The practical consequence is simple: the more plainly your own site states what you do, where, for whom and at what price, the less Google has to guess it from somewhere else. Our article « What AI Overviews did to traffic in France, in nine days » covered what the AI Overviews rollout did to clicks. What is new in September 2026 is that the same mechanism now applies to your name.

What do these numbers not tell you?

They do not tell you how many clicks you lost on your own name. Ahrefs measured, in February 2026 and across 300,000 keywords, a click-through rate for position one that was 58% lower when an AI Overview appeared, but that measurement covered general queries rather than branded ones. Carrying that figure over to your company name would be an extrapolation, not a finding.

They also do not tell you the situation is settled. The 90.48% peak of September 27, 2026 fell back to 82.06% two days later, Google has confirmed nothing, and a rise that steep over a few days can be a test that gets pulled. One more caveat: DemandSphere counts an AI Overview as present even when the brand being searched is not cited in it. The presence of an overview says nothing about what it says about you.

What should you do now, and when should you do nothing?

Start by looking, not by fixing. Type your company name into Google, on a phone and on a desktop, and read the paragraph that comes back. If it is accurate, your job is to keep it that way. If it is wrong, vague or out of date, you know your priority, and it sits on the pages Google is citing rather than on your keywords.

  • Check that your home page states, in readable text, what you do, where you operate and what you charge or your price range.
  • Check that your official details match everywhere: website, business listing, professional networks, trade directories.
  • Track your branded queries in Search Console over the coming weeks, watching impressions as closely as clicks.
  • Write down what the AI Overview says about you today, so that you can spot a drift in a month.

There are cases where this news should change nothing for you. If nobody searches your company name, the issue is awareness rather than AI visibility, and your budget is better spent elsewhere. If your site has no substantial content worth citing yet, write that first: no technical setting makes up for a page that says nothing. And if the AI Overview on your name is already accurate and points back to you, you have nothing to repair urgently, you have something to monitor. Our measurement method is published on our method page, so that you can judge for yourself what is verified and what is not.

Frequently asked questions

Does an AI Overview on my name mean Google is talking about me?

No. DemandSphere counts an AI Overview as present even when the brand being searched is not cited in it. The only way to know what Google says about your company is to read the paragraph yourself, on both mobile and desktop.

Do these figures apply outside the United States?

Not directly. The Ahrefs 82.91% figure covers US desktop results, and DemandSphere aggregates all markets without publishing a country breakdown yet. Treat the direction as established and the exact level in your own market as unmeasured.

Am I going to lose traffic on my company name?

Nobody has measured that on branded queries so far. Ahrefs found a 58% lower click-through rate for position one when an AI Overview appears, in February 2026, but on general queries. Watch your own Search Console numbers rather than transposing that percentage.

Can I stop Google showing an AI Overview on my brand?

There is no setting that removes AI Overviews on your brand while keeping you in the standard results. The available lever is the other way round: make your site explicit enough and your details consistent enough that the overview leans on you rather than on third parties.

Is this urgent?

Only if the overview shown on your name is wrong, out of date, or points to a competitor. If nobody is searching your company name yet, the issue is awareness, and your budget will do more good elsewhere.
