Google is taking ads in AI Mode international. The slot you cannot buy just got smaller.
Google will start selling advertising inside its AI answers outside the United States. Philipp Schindler, Alphabet's chief business officer, announced it on the third quarter earnings call on October 28, 2026: « Today, we are announcing the expansion of ads in AI Mode into international markets. » He added that the move takes Google's monetization footprint global for the first time. No country was named and no rollout date was given.
The announcement matters because of what it reverses. Ads in AI Mode had been a United States experiment, and Google had told advertisers in other markets that the feature would arrive without them. France is the documented case: on June 30, 2026, the agency Ad's up Consulting reported Google's position for the French launch as « there will be no ad integration in either AI Mode or AI Overviews. » AI Overviews went live in France on July 22, 2026, the last major market to receive them, and that answer box carried no advertising. As of October 28, 2026, that exemption is no longer Google's stated position anywhere.
What exactly did Alphabet announce on October 28, 2026?
Alphabet announced two separate things, and only one of them applies outside the United States. The first is the expansion of ads in AI Mode into international markets, with no country list and no timetable. The second is multi turn ads in AI Mode, which remain United States only: AI Mode accepts follow up questions, and multi turn ads now track that conversation across the follow ups instead of appearing only against the opening query. If you sell outside the United States, the first announcement is yours and the second is not, yet.
Philipp Schindler also gave investors a specific commercial claim: « Click through rates are already similar between sponsored and organic product list items within AI Mode. » Read that for what it is, a vendor statement to shareholders rather than an independent measurement. It still tells you something useful. Google's own position is that inside an AI answer, a paid placement captures roughly as much attention as an earned one.
What changes for a business outside the United States?
The AI answer stops being a purely editorial surface and becomes a surface shared with advertisers. Three practical consequences follow for any company that was counting on being cited there.
- The unpaid space in the answer gets scarcer. A surface that carries advertising holds less room for cited sources, and a citation is the only route into that answer that cannot be bought.
- The organic click was already under pressure. When an AI overview is shown, the click through rate of the number one result is 58% lower than when it is not, according to the Ahrefs study published on February 4, 2026, which compared 300,000 keywords between December 2023 and December 2025.
- Your competitors will be able to pay their way into the answer. You will not be able to pay your way into being its source, because those are two different mechanisms.
None of this means search traffic is about to vanish, and the trajectory is worth stating plainly rather than dramatically. Alphabet reported $63.3 billion in Search and other advertising revenue for the third quarter of 2026, up 12% year over year. TechCrunch notes that the same line grew 17% in the second quarter and 19% in the first. Search is still an enormous and growing business. What has changed is that part of its growth now has to come from inventory placed inside the AI answer.
Why is Google opening this surface now?
Because the deceleration above is the whole explanation. Queries are moving into AI answers that Google was not monetizing, Alphabet's total revenue reached $127.6 billion for the quarter, up 25%, and the share price still fell 8% after publication because the Search line missed expectations. Advertising inventory has to follow attention, and attention has moved into the answer box.
For a business planning its next twelve months, that financial pressure is a more reliable forecast than any product announcement. The advertising surface inside AI answers will expand rather than contract, because the incentive points in one direction only.
Does a paid slot replace a free citation?
No, and the difference is the decision to understand before opening a budget. A paid placement in AI Mode is bought per click, can be live within days, and stops the day the budget stops. A citation is earned because your page is readable, dated, attributable and quotable by a machine, and it does not switch off at the end of the month. One rents attention, the other builds eligibility. They do not substitute for each other.
It is worth saying when advertising is the better answer. If your site has almost nothing of its own worth quoting, if your company exists nowhere on the web except its own home page, or if you need revenue inside six weeks, buying visibility is the rational choice and working on citation eligibility will not produce anything fast enough. The reverse is equally true: paying to appear inside an AI answer with nothing substantial behind the click only accelerates the spend.
What should you do before the rollout reaches your market?
Nothing new, and that is the point of this announcement. What determines whether an AI system can cite you does not depend on Google's calendar or its business model: a site an answer engine's crawler can actually read, pages that answer one question and keep their meaning out of context, and a company identity stated explicitly and consistently from one corner of the web to another. Those are the only assets that opening an ad network does not devalue.
Two earlier articles on this blog document what has already happened to this surface. « What AI Overviews did to traffic in France, in nine days » measures what the July 2026 launch did to clicks in the last market to receive it. « In Google's AI answers, the sentence describing your site is no longer yours » shows that Google now writes the blurb attached to your link rather than lifting it from your page. Advertising is the third layer added to a surface where you already control neither the summary nor the click through rate.
So the useful measurement is not watching Google's announcements, it is knowing where you stand on the signals an answer engine actually checks. Our /en/methode page sets out which ones we verify, and how.
Frequently asked questions
Which countries will get ads in AI Mode?
Alphabet announced the expansion into international markets on October 28, 2026 without publishing a country list or a timetable. No market has been named. What is settled is that ads in AI Mode are no longer a United States only product, and that Google's earlier position for individual markets, such as no ad integration at all for the French launch, no longer stands.
Can you pay Google to be cited as a source in an AI answer?
No. Ads in AI Mode are paid placements, labelled as such and bought per click through Google Ads campaigns. The sources cited inside an AI answer come from a different mechanism, based on whether your pages are readable and quotable by an answer engine's crawler. There is no product that sells a citation.
What are multi turn ads in AI Mode?
AI Mode accepts follow up questions, and multi turn ads follow that conversation across the follow ups rather than appearing only against the first query. Alphabet announced the format on October 28, 2026 for the United States only.
Should you stop working on AI visibility now that Google sells the placement?
It depends on your situation. If your site has little of its own to quote and you need sales quickly, buying visibility is more rational. If you have substantive content and an established business, the paid slot stops with the budget while citation eligibility persists. The two mechanisms are distinct and neither replaces the other.
Does this mean organic search results are finished?
No. It means the answer above them now has paid inventory in it, on top of a click through rate that was already 58% lower for the number one result when an AI overview appears, per Ahrefs in February 2026. Organic results still carry the majority of search traffic. The change is that the layer above them is getting more crowded.
