How do you get recommended by an AI when a customer searches nearby?
Two sources carry most of what AI assistants say about local businesses: your Google Business Profile and your own website. BrightLocal's study published on September 16, 2026, which analyzed 1,967,762 citations from more than 200,000 local searches across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, attributes 42% of citations to business websites and 28.63% to Google Business Profile. Being recommended by an AI is still far rarer and far less stable than appearing in Google's local pack, so treat it as a channel that adds to local search, never one that replaces it.
What does an AI actually cite when someone searches for a nearby business?
AI assistants mostly cite two things: business websites and directory listings. The BrightLocal study of September 16, 2026 ran 200,085 non-branded localized prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, covering 1,342 tracked locations over 60 days, and recorded 1,967,762 citations. The split: 42% business websites, 28.63% Google Business Profile, 9.53% Yelp, 2.23% Facebook, 1.79% Tripadvisor.
One figure in that BrightLocal study deserves to be read on its own: business websites accounted for 93% of all unique cited domains, roughly 108,000 domains out of 116,000. A handful of directories supply an enormous volume of citations from very few addresses, while the variety in answers comes from business websites. Your own site is not a secondary channel in this mechanism. It is the only place where your name can surface without an intermediary deciding to include you.
Why is a Google Business Profile not enough on its own?
A Google Business Profile answers who you are, where you are and when you open. It does not answer why you. Every competitor in your category fills the same fields, in the same format, with the same labels. The profile is the single most cited source in local AI answers, at 28.63% of the citations BrightLocal recorded, and it is also where your room to differentiate is smallest.
Your website is the only material where you choose the sentences. A generative engine pulls one to three sentences out of a page and shows them without their surrounding context. If the sentence stating what you do, which town or neighborhood you serve and what you charge to start does not exist in text anywhere on your site, no engine can invent it for you. That absence is the common thread running through sites that never surface, which we broke down in "Your site is invisible to AI: the five most common causes".
Do AI assistants really recommend many local businesses?
No, and the gap against Google is wide. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index, published on January 28, 2026 and covering more than 350,000 locations across 2,751 multi-location brands, found that an average of 35.9% of locations appear in Google's local 3-Pack, against 1.2% recommended by ChatGPT. BrightLocal measured the same gap from another angle in September 2026: Google Maps mentioned a tracked business in 66% of searches, compared with 32% to 38% across the AI surfaces.
Consumer behavior is moving faster than those recommendation rates, which is what makes the channel worth watching rather than ignoring. BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, published on February 11, 2026 and based on 1,002 US adult consumers, found that 45% now use ChatGPT or another generative AI tool to get local business recommendations, up from 6% in the 2025 edition. The demand side has arrived. The supply side, meaning how often any given business actually gets named, has not caught up.
The budget consequence is direct. If your location does not already appear in Google's local pack, that is where your proximity visibility is decided, not inside AI answers. An incomplete Google Business Profile, an address that disagrees between your site and your listings, or a thin review count costs you more today than a missing technical file does.
Why does the same question return different businesses each time?
Because a local AI answer is not a ranking. BrightLocal re-ran its local prompts and measured only 20% to 33% overlap between two sets of results: 23% on ChatGPT, 21% on Google AI Mode, 33% on AI Overviews. A business seen once reappears in roughly half of later attempts, specifically 50% on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode and 58% on AI Overviews. ChatGPT names an average of 4.1 businesses per local answer, in a range of 1 to 7.
That instability has a practical consequence for an owner: asking ChatGPT the question once measures nothing. An absence can be noise, and an appearance can be an accident. Only a repeated series of checks, across several assistants and several phrasings, separates a signal from chance. We covered that trap in "Asking ChatGPT whether it knows you measures nothing".
What part of this is genuinely under your control?
Exactly one eligibility condition is officially documented, and it is technical. OpenAI's help center page "Searching the web with ChatGPT", consulted on October 18, 2026, states two requirements for a website to be eligible for inclusion in ChatGPT search results: allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl the site, and confirm that the website host or content delivery network allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses. The same page states that placement is not guaranteed. It also says that OpenAI shares an approximate location with trusted third-party providers for nearby business listings, without ever naming those providers.
Here is what stays in your hands, in descending order of likely return for a small or local business:
- Keep a complete, current Google Business Profile, since it is the single most cited source in the local AI answers BrightLocal measured in September 2026.
- Write the sentences you want quoted onto your own site: the service, the town and neighborhood you cover, your hours, your starting price. Information that is not in the text cannot be cited.
- Check that your name, address, hours and category agree across your site, your profile and the directories that list you.
- Let OAI-SearchBot through, and confirm your host or firewall is not blocking it upstream. An open robots.txt achieves nothing if the CDN returns an error to the crawler.
- Keep recent reviews coming, because they feed both of the most cited source families at once. BrightLocal's 2026 consumer survey found 74% of consumers only consider reviews written in the last three months.
Those levers belong to two different disciplines. Information consistency and reviews are classic local SEO work. Answer-engine crawler access, text that survives extraction, and the public files AI assistants go looking for are what an AI visibility scan measures, and we publish the three axes and nineteen signals behind ours on our method page.
When is this not your project yet?
Three situations make AI visibility work premature for a local business. If you have no website, or a one-page site with no text describing what you sell, there is nothing to cite, and writing three useful pages comes before any measurement tool. If your Google Business Profile is empty or you have fewer than a dozen reviews, the next dollar returns more in local SEO than in AI optimization, given the 35.9% against 1.2% gap SOCi measured in January 2026. And if your business is not searched by geography at all, because it runs on referrals or on tenders, local search simply is not your problem to solve.
One thing deserves to be said plainly: nobody can sell you a citation inside an AI answer. OpenAI's own documentation says placement is not guaranteed, and BrightLocal's measurements show an answer that changes between two identical attempts. What can be bought and measured is eligibility, meaning the probability that your business is findable, readable and consistent at the moment an AI assembles its answer.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Google Business Profile to be recommended by an AI?
It is not mandatory, but it is the single most cited source in local AI answers: 28.63% of the 1,967,762 citations BrightLocal recorded in September 2026. Without one, you give up the best documented lever and let directories describe you in your place.
If ChatGPT names my business once, is that secured?
No. BrightLocal measured that a business seen once reappears in roughly half of later attempts: 50% on ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, 58% on AI Overviews. A citation describes a state at a point in time, not a position you have won.
Do customer reviews matter for AI recommendations?
They feed both of the most cited source families at once, your Google Business Profile and review directories such as Yelp, which accounts for 9.53% of the citations BrightLocal recorded. No published study sets a star-rating threshold you must reach to be recommended, so be skeptical of numbers quoted without a method.
How much does measuring local AI visibility cost?
The biencite.fr scan is free, read-only and needs no account. Weekly tracking across five AI assistants starts at 24 euros per month on the Starter plan. A guided installation of the fixes on your site costs 290 euros.
Does Google publish how its AI answers pick local businesses?
Not in any detail you can act on. What is measurable from the outside is which sources get cited, which is what the BrightLocal study does, and that is why its citation breakdown is more useful here than any claim about internal mechanics.
